Substance Abuse for Teenagers

The society is currently confronted with issues regarding juvenile delinquencies and drug addiction. What is so alarming is that a child as early as 5 years of age may already be engaged in substance abuse.

Study shows that an unhappy childhood due to poor family relationship is one reason why teens develop substance abuse habits. Some of the teens may have experienced parental neglect, harsh punishment or even sexual abuse while still young. And because of the anxiety, low self esteem and fear that developed in their early stage of life, chances are an experiment with the “illegal substance” can take place as a way of coping with the situation.

Another factor is peer pressure. As we all know, teens are caught up between the child and adult stage that they always want to fit in and belong. Once the child or the teen associate with friends who engage in substance abuse, most likely, he/she can be influenced.

Other factors such as low parental attachment, feeling of being unwanted, rejection and family conflict can also contribute to the early substance abuse of teenagers. They may indulge in such activities to cover up the fact that they have problems. The use of illegal substances such as drugs can be an escape from the present situation and the feelings of insecurity.

Drug abuse and juvenile delinquency are two related things. It is found out that teens that are into substance abuse are most likely to commit crimes in order to sustain their vices. Since their inhibitions are lowered by the “drug”, they can take risks. But we can never say that teens who take drugs greatly contribute to the increasing crime rates.

Reasons may vary from one user to another but it still boils down to one thing-emotional problems. Support from the family or peers can help lower the substance abuse cases in the early stage but still it goes with the choice. It is better to educate teenagers about the consequences that they are going to face in the future rather than judge them with the present situation.

Life inside a treatment center is not horrible. People who are to be admitted often thinks of it as prison because of the strict rules that are implied. Well people aren’t exactly admitted there to be to have extra fun, they are there to be rehabilitated from their addictions. But the set-up of the rehab centers these days is to look more like paradise for the clients to enjoy their stay and feel more relaxed.

This is a very nice concept considering that one of the purposes of these facilities is to relieve their patients from stress that have caused them to start their addiction. Fact is this kind of approach can increase the effectivity of the treatment programs. A refreshing ambiance, nice landscape, awesome facilities is a great way in reaching the goal of restoring ones health. In this way the patient can loosen up and just think of things in a positive way far from any stressors of the outside world. Also, aside from the being professionals, having sociable staffs that are eager to help the patients in their needs is a plus, making the patients more comfortable during their stay.

Inpatient rehab is at its best when this kind of approach is used towards the clients. More centers are adapting into this kind of approach for this would take away the impression that these kinds of establishments are worst to be in. It would encourage more people with problems to get admitted.

A tradition is a meaningful and significant practice that is passed down from generation to generation. It usually denotes patriotism and a sign of respect as a member of the community to participate in such customs. Festivals and fiestas offer a unique window to each Filipino’s tradition and an opportunity to savor the many celebratory flavors of its cultural diversity. To know if the community enjoyed the merriment and festivities, the last morsel of food is usually eaten and the last jigger of liquor is more often than not quaffed. A fiesta, will not be completely celebrated without alcohol. Whether you like it or not, it has been a part of the Filipino tradition.

Alcoholic beverages offer significant health benefits:

  1. It lowers the danger of a heart attack,
  2. It decreases the occurence of Diabetes,
  3. It minimizes the risk of acquiring Alzheimer’s disease
  4. It reduces the danger of stroke and
  5. It increases an individual’s lifespan.

In very small amounts, alcohol can help a person feel more relaxed or less anxious. The impression is that drinking is cool, but the nervous system changes comes from drinking too much alcohol. It can make people do stupid or illegal things. More alcohol causes greater changes in the brain, resulting in intoxication. People who have overused alcohol may stagger, lose their coordination, and slur their speech. When large amounts of alcohol are consumed, the liver cells in our body lose their function that can result to Cirrhosis, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Liver Cancer.

Many Filipinos drink as an outlet to temporarily forget their problems, anxieties and frustrations. Many people can’t control their drinking without help. People with drinking problems can’t stop drinking until they are ready to admit they have a problem and get help. Everyone makes decisions about whether to drink and how much. It’s possible to enjoy a festival, fiesta, party or other event as much, if not more so, when you don’t drink too much. And with the central nervous system working as it’s supposed to, Filipinos will remember more about the great they had!

Alarming Prescribed Drug Addiction in Florida

prescription_drugs1Florida rehab programs have been providing various drug addiction programs like heroin addiction treatment, opiate addiction treatment and prescription medication detox. In most cases, inpatient rehab is treated because of addiction to prescribed drugs. In the state of Florida, there has been a tremendous rise in prescription drug addiction. One of the major reasons is that, unlike many other states in the U.S., Florida doesn’t have a strict policy regarding drug prescription. There is also no proper system that would track who’s being prescribed what. This opens the door to “doctor shopping” – an individual go from one doctor to another making up stories about his symptoms in order to get painkillers, tranquilizer, and so on. And neither the doctor nor the pharmacists who fills up these prescriptions have any idea that the patient got the same drug from five other doctors and five other pharmacists earlier that day. Because of that, there is a high possibility that these prescribed drugs are sold to other who might also have a drug problem. Understandably, Florida drug rehabs have placed their focus on prescribed drug addiction treatment.

There have been several proposal pushed in the state to combat this problem. One of which is the drug prescription monitoring program wherein most states have already adopted. This program gives doctors and other health professionals, as well as law enforcement, access to information about prescriptions being given to individuals. In this way, doctors or pharmacist that prescribed the medicine could check on the database whether there is an abuse to these prescribed drugs. And if the records the doctors or pharmacist see an indication of drug abuse, they can refuse to prescribe the drug. They may also recommend the patient to seek counseling and get help through inpatient rehabilitation.

This program could have a significant impact on the prevention and treatment of prescription drug addiction and abuse in Florida. And probably, this program may keep those drugs out of the hands of someone you care about.
