Alcoholism
Remember that everything that is being taken too much is bad. Take what is enough and don’t take beyond the limit. An example of taking things more than we need, is illustrated in drinking alcoholic beverages. We know that all excess is bad, and it is the same as drinking plenty of alcohol. In the United States, a survey discovered that there is a growing number of alcohol dependence and abuse.
Alcohol abuse refers to excessive or problematic use of alcohol. It produces one or more of the following effects in the person:
o Failure to fulfill major obligations at work, school, or home
o Legal problems]
Its recurrent use can bring hazard to situations and relationships. There are plenty of interpersonal problem that have been caused by or worsened by drinking.
Alcohol dependence refers to a more serious disorder involving excessive and wrong use. It leads to 3 or more of the following signs:
o Tolerance changes (need for more to achieve desired effect, or achieving the effect with lesser amounts of alcohol)
o Withdrawal symptoms following a reduction or cessation of drinking (such as sweating, rapid pulse, tremors, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, agitation, anxiety, or seizures) or using alcohol to avoid withdrawal symptoms (for example, early morning drinking)
o Drinking more alcohol or drinking over a longer period of time than intended (loss of control)
o Inability to cut down or stop
o Spending a great deal of time drinking or recovering from its effects
o Giving up important social, occupational, or recreational activities
o Continuing to drink despite knowing alcohol use has caused or worsened problems
Alcoholism can be prevented, same as smoking. Don’t start so it won’t get hard to quit. If you do, you would quit life in an early age. Every thing that goes beyond limit is bad.
Teen’s Abusive Drinking Problem
Filed under: addiction, alcoholism, health, information, treatment
Teenage addiction to drugs and alcohol has become more rampant today than it is before thirty years ago. And in these most recent years, alcohol addiction has become alarming. The number of teenagers undergoing alcohol addiction counseling has increased tremendously. And even treatment centers have begun to accept patients younger than twelve. Though it is, teenage is such a delicate subject for psychology of teenagers is very complicated and external factors are influential in alcohol use in this age group.
Being a teen is not easy as some of us may have already passed this stage. This is the time where a lot of changes occur, both physical and emotional. And these changes play a large role in the confusion and the need for acceptance which teenage feel at this time. Peer pressure is a big motivator in the increased use of alcohol as well as drugs. Teenagers are experiencing a stage where they have identity crisis. They are beginning to prepare their life as an adult and this sometimes brings them to confusion. To a teenager, it seems that their friends are the only ones that understand them. And the need to be accepted to this circle of friends, is sometimes participating to drugs and alcohol.
Generally, professionals are hesitant to label a teenager as an addict. One of the reasons is because when a person is drinking alcohol regularly it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are already suffering from alcoholism. And another reason is that teenagers are developing psychologically and it would be very dangerous to diagnose them as an addict before they are at least 20 years old. Thus, it is not good to force a teenager into recovery neither it is to put them in a rehabilitation program just because you discover they are drinking alcohol. But if your child is beginning to develop serious alcohol abuse and cannot cease their use, then a treatment is necessary in this situation.
Drug Intervention
Drug intervention is an essential step toward a complete and resolute treatment from drug addiction as well as alcoholism. It is in fact, considered the initial step to recovery from any addiction. But what really is drug intervention?
Perhaps a better way to start a detailed discussion of drug intervention is giving definition to intervention as a process. Intervention basically refers to carefully crafted procedures that require a non-compliant person towards help and treatment. Interventionist can be anybody else who can effectively facilitate drug intervention. Ideal interventionists include individuals who have strong influence on the addicted individual such as the family, friends and colleagues at work.
Drug intervention refers to a plan of action geared toward helping drug alcohol addicts get back in order, stay away form drugs and alcohol, and never turn into these vices again. Effective drug intervention results in drug and alcohol treatment.
According to researches, a large number of drug alcohol addicts hardly believe in drug intervention that is being offered in most California drug rehabs. In effect, drug alcohol addicts do not get access to the services of health professionals who are capable of assessing addiction, dealing with denial and resistance plus determining the model of intervention that will have the best outcome for each individual in need of drug and alcohol treatment.
Drug intervention is geared to motivate an addicted loved one to accept treatment for alcoholism and/ or substance abuse and save them from further damage due to addictions.
Family Intervention

Individuals suffering from drug problems and alcoholism are often in denial of their predicament. Most of these addicted individuals do not submit themselves to rehabilitation centers where they can have full access to the kind of treatment they require. As a result, these individuals tend to suffer more from their addiction.
Be conscious of each of your family member. Take time to notice changes in behavior, lifestyles, friends and hobbies. If you suspect that a family member is at the verge of losing self to addiction, take the initiative to conduct family intervention.
Family intervention is an effective approach to stop loved ones from any self-destructive behavior and practice such as addiction. This process is especially helpful when addicted individuals continue to be in denial of their problems and when they refuse to accept the help that is offered them.
Basically, family intervention is used to cut self-destructive practices such as alcoholism and substance abuse. It is also proven effective in treating eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
Family intervention is conducted in such a way that love and respect for the addicted individual is manifested despite the shortcomings of the drug or alcohol addict. It is said to be a non-confrontational, non-judgmental approach which can effectively encourage drug alcohol addicts to seek professional help from rehab centers.

Success of any addiction treatment and rehabilitation programs depends on several factors that include the family. We all know that it’s hard to treat such people with addiction especially if you can’t control them anymore. Addiction treatment should basically start with addiction treatment services like family intervention. Drug and alcohol addiction affects not only the individual who is into dependent to alcohol and substances. It also affects the family and even the society where he belongs.
An alcoholic or drug addict parent is likely to create unhealthy relationships with his/her significant other and children. As a result, the family becomes dysfunctional. With the case of child or children who have drug or alcohol addiction problems, parents and other family members as well play very important roles.
Persons with addiction problems do not see the problem within themselves because they deny the fact that they’re already addicted to substance abuse. They need somebody to help them come to their senses and realize the existence of addiction that they need to seek addiction treatment services such as drug addiction counseling from health professionals. This can possibly happen through effective family intervention and the use of family treatment program.
Family members play a pivotal role in almost all drug alcohol treatment programs. Alcoholics and drug addicts are easily motivated and encouraged to go through drug addiction counseling and to ultimately enter addiction rehabilitation center when they have the love and unwavering support of their families.
Swine Flu Outbreak hits United States

Scientists still do not get how the swine influenza has come to affect humans. Five U.S states have reported that swine flue is present in their states. Almost 40 cases are reported but only one case led to hospitalization according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. The states that are hit by the swine flue outbreak were New York, Texas, Kansas, Ohio and California.
But in Mexico, where the outbreak started, hundreds were reportedly ill and 149 of them have died with the same strain of virus that hit the United States. Reports also emerge telling that the outbreak has reached other countries like Britain, Canada, New Zealand and France. Scientists now know what the virus’s main component is and found out that this kind of influenza strain contains genetic materials from swine, bird and human influenza. But it still remains a mystery how lethal the combination of these three does to people.
An epidemiologist in Atlanta says that until the biological properties of this influenza strain is understood, it is better for the people to refrain from going to Mexico where the outbreak started. Some officials also told the public to limit interpersonal contact, close schools in affected areas, canceling all social events and subjecting the people who have been exposed to the virus to quarantine is necessary.
Scientists are hoping that the timing of the influenza outbreak will limit the impact and they also said that as of now, no existing vaccine is found to be effective against this kind of strain. They believe that the outbreak will continue but they are positive that they can find a cure for this disease in time.
Alcoholism Symptoms
Alcoholism is a disease characterized by constant and increasing use of alcohol, which may eventually lead to alcohol addiction. Alcoholism is a vice that is likely to bring in detrimental effects not only to the physical and mental state of the person himself, but even to his family and his community. Such unlikely results trigger immediate intervention and treatment for alcoholism, if one would want to avoid further injuries.
With that said, knowing alcoholism symptoms is important. After all, how can you decide it’s time to intervene, when you do not know exactly the warning signs of the existence of this treacherous disease?
California drug rehab centers say it is important to be cautious of the signs of being alcoholic. An alcoholic person actually feels rather offended and guilty when asked about his drinking vice. In worst cases, alcohol addicts have a hard time getting away from alcohol; in fact, some of them may even crave for it first thing in the morning. This is an instant that is rather serious and we would always want to avoid this –or at least cure the effects of alcoholism by seeking the help of professionals from the alcoholism treatment centers who are more than willing to help individuals get away form this vice.
Alcoholism symptoms can be noticed not only on the physical appearance of the alcoholic person. Medical personnel at various alcohol addiction treatment centers across California maintain that too much alcohol may likely result to deficiency in thiamine or b-complex which is very essential in the normal functioning of the nervous system. Thiamine or b-complex deficiency leads to tingling and numbness in the extremities. This can get worse and develop into psychosis, dementia, and even stroke. Blackouts are also very common among alcoholics.
Puffiness around the eyes and swelling on the face is also common among heavy drinkers admitted to alcoholism rehabs, which also get to experience palpitations and throbbing due to increased blood pressure. Increase in blood pressure enlarges the heart and weakens the cardiac muscles which may later lead to cardiac failure or angina.
Alcoholism symptoms worsen once it starts to rule out the central organ of the body which is the stomach, where alcohol causes inflammation or gastritis that may end up in ulcers. Worse problems arise when alcohol starts affecting the liver as this affects bile production and clotting factor manufacture. This then give many symptoms such as pain in abdomen, yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes, nausea, loss of appetite and diarrhea. On worst cases, additional symptoms of cirrhosis like enlarged portal veins, capillary formations on the skin and abnormal or delayed blood clotting may be observed.
Too much alcohol on the body reduces the production of white blood cells which is responsible for the immune mechanism of the body. As a result, symptoms such as susceptibility to infections become evident. The worst symptom of alcoholism is mental psychosis that is characterized by an altered nature and extreme tendency towards violence, confirms professionals from alcohol treatment centers.
True enough, alcoholism is a threat to the individual drawn to taking too much alcohol. With that, it is very important to go for immediate treatment to correct this vice.

That is why family intervention is the key to changing the addict’s behavior.
Alcohol is dangerous to our heath because as we all know, it is one of the main causes of accidents on the road. Filipino Caution: Effects Of Alcohol Beverages
A tradition is a meaningful and significant practice that is passed down from generation to generation. It usually denotes patriotism and a sign of respect as a member of the community to participate in such customs. Festivals and fiestas offer a unique window to each Filipino’s tradition and an opportunity to savor the many celebratory flavors of its cultural diversity. To know if the community enjoyed the merriment and festivities, the last morsel of food is usually eaten and the last jigger of liquor is more often than not quaffed. A fiesta, will not be completely celebrated without alcohol. Whether you like it or not, it has been a part of the Filipino tradition.
Alcoholic beverages offer significant health benefits:
- It lowers the danger of a heart attack,
- It decreases the occurence of Diabetes,
- It minimizes the risk of acquiring Alzheimer’s disease
- It reduces the danger of stroke and
- It increases an individual’s lifespan.
In very small amounts, alcohol can help a person feel more relaxed or less anxious. The impression is that drinking is cool, but the nervous system changes comes from drinking too much alcohol. It can make people do stupid or illegal things. More alcohol causes greater changes in the brain, resulting in intoxication. People who have overused alcohol may stagger, lose their coordination, and slur their speech. When large amounts of alcohol are consumed, the liver cells in our body lose their function that can result to Cirrhosis, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Liver Cancer.
Many Filipinos drink as an outlet to temporarily forget their problems, anxieties and frustrations. Many people can’t control their drinking without help. People with drinking problems can’t stop drinking until they are ready to admit they have a problem and get help. Everyone makes decisions about whether to drink and how much. It’s possible to enjoy a festival, fiesta, party or other event as much, if not more so, when you don’t drink too much. And with the central nervous system working as it’s supposed to, Filipinos will remember more about the great they had!
