Headaches are defined as the pain in the head or upper neck area. It is considered one of the most common body pains and is said to be caused by several factors. According to medicinenet.com, headaches are classified into three and each classification requires specific treatment regimens. These classifications of headaches are:

  1. Primary headache - includes migraines, tension and cluster headaches as well as a variety of less common types of headaches. Studies suggest that 90% of adults have tension headaches. It is also said that 12% or around 28 million people in the United States have had bouts of migraine headaches. Cluster headache is a rare type of headache and is affecting 0.1% of all populations across the world.
  2. Secondary headache - results from underlying structural problem in the head or neck. This maybe caused by either hemorrhage in the brain, tumor, meningitis or encephalitis.
  3. Cranial neuralgias, facial pain, and other headaches - refers to the pain that occurs as a result of the inflammation of nerves in the head and neck region. Inflamed nerves are considered to be the culprit behind facial pain.

Most people treat headaches with over-the-counter medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen, paracetamol, and acetaminophen. While these drugs are proven effective for headache treatment, it is still worthwhile to try alternatives which would not require taking medicines. Medicines after all may not always be good for the body. In fact, some of these chemicals can be addictive.

Glamour magazines share some simple and easy ways to combat headaches. The first is drinking clean water. Water contains minerals required by the body. It rehydrates and eases headaches. Another way to combat headache is through acupressure.
